LOS ANGELES, CA - When "American Idol" kicks off this January, the show that features vocal hacks, nutjobs and bizarre musical wannabes in a brutal audition for a chance at stardom, a talented dog will actually audition for the chance to have his album recorded. Baxter, who is a real dog that can sing, belongs to Harry Duquesne of Freeport, PA.
"I used to bring my dog down to the bar for laughs," said Harry Duquesne, who sells furniture for a living. "Then one day at the bar, the guys and I were sitting around bullshitting when suddenly someone took the mike and starts into a rousing 'Proud to be an American' only the words were changes to 'Proud to be a Canine....'"
Duquesne said he was surprised to find that it was his dog in the back of the bar singing. He was even more surprised how good he sounded.

Baxter can play many instruments. Here he sings and plays Elton John's tribute to the late Princess Diana, "Candle In the Wind." |
"A lot of my buddies have daughters that listen to Britney Spears and stuff," he said, tossing back a boilermaker. "I will tell you, Baxter can run circles around her, literally and figuratively."
Duquesne is not sure how Baxter will react to the harsh criticism from Simon Cowell and the others. He said his dog only takes so much verbal bashing before he puts his chomps into somebody. He also said he has a little "Mississippi leg hound" in him, too.
To date, Baxter sings mostly stuff by gangster rapper "Snoop Dog". However, he does not want to be typecast as a dog gangster rapper. Rather, Baxter has expanded his repertoire of songs to include such notable torch performers as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.

Baxter can even read music, although he simply likes to go with the beat and flow of the moment. He is big into freestyle. |
If all goes well, Baxter plans to release a CD called "P*ssing In The Tall Weeds". We asked Baxter (using a Barktionary) if it would change him as a canine if he achieved musical stardom and riches beyond his wildest dog dreams. Specifically, what would a dog do with a million bucks?
"What do you think I'm going to do with it?" he barked angrily. "Bury it in back yard you numb nuts?"
He also says he plans to get a band together after his Idol audition runs its course. The name of the band?
The Rolling Bones.
