Celebrating with el Diablo: Though the association of the color red with the Devil is a rather contemporary one, CoverUps.com proves the postulation of the Devil as red and not black or green is right on the money!
Long cherished as a cultural event, many Spaniards would hold large
festivities whereby a man dressed up as the Devil would come and bless
the ceremony. The group would then happily dance in a circle around
the Devil as he selected multiple dancing partners throughout the
night. Inviting them into his circle, it was presumed that anyone
chosen was to have extremely good luck the following year.
This cultural tradition continues to date, but it wasn't until the
recent festivities held in Barcelona in 2004 were interrupted by the
visit of, not a man in the guise of the Devil, but Satan himself appeared
to the people to bless them. The Devil gave his blessings while shouting, "Salud a todo!" (Health to
all!). The people looked on in
fear.
It wasn't for some hours and a few drinks that the people began
to understand that this phenomenon was a good omen and that there was
nothing to fear. All the years of invoking the Devil’s blessing had
finally paid off and together the group gathered round el Diablo and
danced the night away. The Devil was said to have danced with
four partners that night, all of whom woke up the next day and found
themselves millionaires!
